PREFACE

According to oral tradition, our ancestor, Mr. Mai Thiên Lượng, originally came from Bình Định Province (Phú Yên). He moved to the South together with two other brothers. One settled in Gia Định Province, and another went to Bến Tre Province. As for him, he settled and lived in Mỹ Hội Đông Commune, An Giang Province. By the time of his grandson, Mr. Mai Văn Nhiêu, he saw that the land in Mỹ Hội Đông was eroding into the Hậu River every year, causing the family to lose land. Therefore, he purchased the first parcel of land, stretching from the house of 5 Hậu to the house of 8 Minh, in what is now An Hòa Commune, with the intention of moving the family inland to live. Seeing this, relatives and siblings expressed their desire to move inland with him. Therefore, he continued to purchase the adjoining strip of land extending to the area across from the current Bình Hòa communal house, so that it could be divided among relatives and siblings. For various reasons, it was not until World War I (1914–1918) that the entire family lineage moved to live on the present land. As of 2015, this has been 100 years.

During the Thanh Minh seasons of 1994 and 1995, the descendants went to Mỹ Hội Đông Commune to exhume the graves and bring the remains of the ancestors back to be with their descendants. During the flood season of 1995, the descendants again went to Mỹ Hội Đông to bring back the tombstones, completing the reburial process. Currently, the graves of the founding ancestors, the sixth great-grandparents, and the ancestral aunt are located within the grave enclosure of Mr. Mai Văn Nhiêu.

The founding ancestor had a youngest daughter, Ms. Mai Sự. She was very skilled in women's domestic arts and household work, so the descendants honored her as the "ancestral aunt". In her later years, she lived with her wealthiest nephew, Mr. Mai Văn Quyền. At present, Mr. Quyền's descendants continue to worship her and hold an annual death anniversary ceremony for her on the 21st day of the 3rd lunar month.

Note
  • This genealogy was compiled in 2015, continuing from the genealogy created in 1950, so much information has been lost.
  • Before each person's name, there are birth-order numbers used to indicate the branch of the lineage and that person's order within it. For example: Mrs. thứ (6, 6, 8, 2) Mai Yếu Tuyết. These numbers indicate that she was the second child, daughter of Mr. 8, paternal granddaughter of Mr. 6, and great-granddaughter of the sixth great-grandfather.
  • This genealogy is organized into three branches: the branch of the sixth great-grandfather, the branch of the seventh great-grandfather, and the branch of the tenth great-grandfather. In each branch, the descendants gathered information about the ancestors of their own branch.
